Apple and Cisco settle the Iphone

Apple and Cisco settled their dispute concerning the Iphone trademark.
After launching the Iphone, Apple was sued by Cisco, which owned the trademark since year 2000.
The agreement says that both companies can use the “Iphone” trademark on their products and no other action will be taken regarding the Iphone.
Other terms of the agreement are confidential, so we don’t know what Apple had to pay, if this was the case.

Chargebox

A novel service has been unleashed this year’s mid January, targeting individuals that encounter the very common low battery issue on their mobile phones.
The creators of the public charging kiosks called Charge boxes, the Box Brands, have launched a texting facility used to notify clients where the nearest kiosk is situated.
Users are invited to text the word ‘Chargebox’ to 80010 followed by the town or postcodes they are in in order to obtain a listing of the three closest kiosks.
Charge boxes allow users to charge their mobile phone for £1 in a secure locker. These kiosks can easily be found in 70 locations, such as easy Internet cafes and Premier Travel Inns. Customers can also charge I-Pods, PSPs and Blackberries at the Chargebox kiosks.

Samsung X830

The Samsung SGH-X830 is probably one of this year’s most interesting phones that we’ve seen this year. To prove that we’ll just say that it’s a very distinctive handset to look at, measuring just 84×30x20mm and coming in at 72 grams, is equipped with a 128×220 pixel display and a distinctive circular control pad.
samsung_x830_1.jpg
It’s a rotator phone that also comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth, and of course there’s a multimedia player capable of playing MP3, AAC and WMA media formats. The SGH-X830 comes in a variety of colours: black, white, orange and pink. The X830’s internal memory is quite generous, 1Gb, however, there’s no expansion slot.
samsung_x830_3.jpg samsung_x830_2.jpg
The Samsung X830 has a USB 2.0 connection, so this means that data can be transferred quickly enough to make it viable to transfer large amounts of data. Samsung say that up to 330 tracks (at 3Mb per file), holding about 250 tracks or 15 albums.
The phone also has EDGE data support but unfortunately it’s dimensions do not provide enough space for 3G or WiFi. The usual features users expect to find within the phone are: PC synchronisation, Java and some PIM tools. Sources say that the Samsung X830 should be available from October 2006 in certain markets.

Nokia Sales

Nokia’s officials reported that sales of mobile phones for Q4 2006 grew 14% to E7.1billion (£4.68bn) compared to the same period in 2005, helped by a strong Latin American market. The average selling price of Nokia’s mobile devices declined by E10 (£6.6) to E89 (£59) over the year. Reports also show that Nokia’s Q4 operating profit for mobile phones has increased 19% year-on-year to E1.26bn (£0.83bn) and operating margin increased from 17.1% to 17.8%. The combined mobile device volume of Nokia’s mobile phones, multimedia and enterprise solutions business groups for the quarter was 106 million units, up
26% year-on-year. In Europe, mobile device volumes increased by 11.4% to 33.3 million units. The manufacturer said its market share for the fourth quarter was 36%, which meant a slight increase from 34% in Q4 2005 Gross margin in 2006. These figures reflect ‘the inability of certain higher end products…to compete effectively in various markets, coupled with a general shift to lower priced products driven primarily by the growth of the emerging markets and Nokia’s strong position in those markets.’ In 2006, net sales of mobile phones increased 19% to E24.8bn (£16.3bn). Operating profit increased 14% to E4.1bn (£2.7bn) but operating margin fell from 17.3% to 16.6%. Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said:

Nokia was able to increase its share of the global device market significantly in 2006 to an estimated 36%, clearly solidifying our number one position in the industry.
