i-mate Hybrid on the Run

It seems like Palm’s failure with the Foleo project doesn’t scare i-mate, as it is rumored to have a laptop-smartphone/PDA surprise in store for us. It is in fact a shell device that should apparently cost around $300 and rely on the smartphone to do all the processing and storage. The question that just pops up into our heads is: will i-mate actually pull it of? After the Foleo project, we have some doubts, but if the rumor is correct, then i-mate has at least one ace up its sleeve.

It should generally be an interesting gadget, more suitable to the corporate types, but if you decide some day that a laptop is not enough for you, sticking a smartphone next to it should certainly do the trick. We can only hope that this combination will turn out to be the right one and that will soon enough be able to hold an appealing device in our hands.

Inclined Towards Religion: the HTC Prophet

Although many other handsets created before the HTC Prophet enlightened us about the almost flawless HTC technology, one more won’t hurt, especially when the rather strange number of names speak so much about it: HTC Prophet, O2 XDA NEO, QTEK S200, Orange SPV 600 and Dopod 818 PRO.

The JAMin is in fact an upgrade to the Imate JAM, featuring: a 200 MHz processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, Windows Mobile 5 PPC edition, SD expansion and basic calendar functions with appointments, calculator, PDF viewer, alarm clock, tasks.
It is a handset that feels good, the only curiosity being its long line of names…well, we guess it’s all about the faith.

i-mate Smartflip

The i-Mate Smartflip is a revolutionary new entry into the smart phone market, Lightweight and ultra slim, offering a never before seen compact and lightweight clamshell design running the new Windows Mobile 5 OS, EDGE and Bluetooth connectivity, yet incorporates a high quality 1.3 megapixel digital camera and personal music player with dedicated controls that allow you to take full advantage of any free time. Measuring just 98.5 x 51.4 x 15.8mm and weighing a mere 99 grams, it looks distinctively similar to the Motorola RAZR V3, with thin lines and sleek curves. The Smartflip opens to reveal an impressive, bright and clear display. The 2.2-inch TFT LCD is smaller than many other smart phones, but this is required because of the size of the unit. It has a very good viewing angle and is clearly visible in sunlight. It includes GPRS and Bluetooth as connectivity options however, infrared is absent. Getting back to the camera, it has a number of features, including grayscale, sepia and cool effects, a 2 and 10 second self-timer, 2x digital zoom and the ability to adjust white balance settings, but it is missing perhaps one of the most important features- a flash. The quality of pictures isn’t impressive with poor colour reproduction and image noise. The Smartflip also enables you to capture short (MMS) or long videos but the quality again isn’t anything to write home about. The Smartflip has an average battery life with up to five hours of talk time and 150 hours of standby time according to i-Mate figures, which we can consider a downside because the phone isn’t 3G.
