It looks like emergency call centers are starting to accept 911 text messages. This is the case of the Waterloo call center in Iowa, which is the first in the country to accept SMS and even reply.
For some of you this might sound crazy, but think about the deaf people or those who are in an extreme situation where silence is their best option in order to stay alive, for example. Sending text messages to 911 is a very good solution. The main disadvantage is that the location can’t be determined through a SMS, unless the user writes it in the message. Another could be that probably many people will try to make stupid jokes or announce an unreal emergency.
All in all, the idea of 911 text messages is a good one, if we think about people in special situations. We hope that other emergency call centers will do the same.
